A day trip to Procida island

While living in Napoli my husband and I got to see many places surrounding this beautiful city. At the end of our year there I insisted that we get to the only place we haven’t visited – Procida island. There are two things I have to say about this island. First, I wish we had time to go there more than once and second – I’m so happy we finally saw it! In this blog post, I’ll tell you all you need to know about a day trip to Procida island.

If you’re coming from Naples, you can buy tickets to Procida and depart from Molo Beverello (the port located close to the city center). Tickets are not cheap.

Depending on time of departure and return and whether you’re going by a ferry or hydrofoil ticket price range is from 20 to 30 euro per person. This is a price for a return ticket. One way ticket is about 15 euro. Two ferry companies are operating between Naples and Procida (Caremar and SNAV). You can check their websites to see the itineraries and buy tickets online. You can also buy them at the port. The ferry ride takes about 40 minutes.

(Tip: If you don’t see Napoli-Procida in the itinerary, search for Napoli-Ischia via Procida.)

What is there to do on Procida island?

Once you get to Procida the first thing you’ll see are rows of colorful houses in Marina Grande. Here, you’ll find restaurants and coffee shops and a few local shops like grocery stores, salumeria, ice cream (gelato) shops. I think this is the most colorful place I’ve been to. Procida is not that popular like Capri but it’s really worth a visit. If you like relaxing atmosphere, positive people, smell of sea and pretty colors then this is definitely a place you should visit.

As I said already, we only went for a day trip to Procida but if you have more time you should stay a day or two more and enjoy the easy Italian life.

Procida is the smallest island in the Gulf of Naples, located between Capo Miseno and the island of Ischia. Its area occupies only 4 square meters and it is inhabited by about 10,500 people. When you read this you know you should explore Procida on foot. It’s the best way to see every pretty corner and to really appreciate the beauty of this island.

Don’t expect to see fancy shops like you might have seen in Capri nor five star hotels and popular restaurants. Instead, enjoy the charm of crumbling facades, laundry hanging outside the doors and fishing nets being thrown in the sea in Marina Corricella.

As I wrote in one of my Instagram captions – one of my favourite movies The Talented Mr. Ripley was filmed here.

The most picturesque and charming spot on the island of Procida is Marina Corricella. This is where you’ll find a few restaurants. I suggest eating there enjoying the sea view on one side and packed colorful houses on the other. The locals say that the houses of Corricella are painted various colors so the fishermen can determine which home is theirs when out at sea.

Try sea food or pasta. You won’t regret it.

A day trip to Procida

The streets of Procida are very narrow and steep. The highest point of the island is Terra Murata. From here you’ll get a gorgeous view of colorful Marina Corricella. We visited Procida in the beginning of June when there were almost no tourists but the weather was crazy hot, so keep that in mind if you’re there in summer.

Mostly Neapolitans visit this island in summer to escape the hot busy days in the city.

There are no words to describe that feeling when you’re walking the narrow streets and have to look up every minute to see the laundry hanging from the windows. It’s a typical Italian scene which adds so much charm to the place. Scooters will pass you by while you’re admiring the details and colors on every single facade.

My advice is – simply walk and enjoy! Appreciate the small things in life! Procida is really a picture perfect! You won’t see everything shining and being renovated or opened for a new summer season.

Quite the opposite! You’ll see local fishermen throwing their nets, ladies hanging clothes to dry, while older gentlemen are sitting in small groups watching the world go by. People will greet you friendly at any restaurant, you’ll see the local kids going out from school and playing in the Marina Corricella. One day like this can make you feel relaxed for a long time.

Ana, this is wonderful! Your photos are perfect! I think you and I were on the island the same week in 2016 and I too, only visited for the day, while I was staying on Ischia for six days. And I too, loved Procida and hope to return someday! I would like to start a blog but cannot get myself motivated. I like yours a lot. Good work!
